Is there an Athena client?

We are not going to deal with the client installed by the KRO installer which should be called the Ragnarok Online (RO) client. Instead, we will concentrate on the smaller client which is used to connect to Athena servers. The Athena client, specifically hexed exe, is a hack of RO client, redirecting login and subsequent signals meant for KRO server to an Athena server.

These files are found in RO folder:
  • Custom Aura
  • Tip of the Day, an on-line help file
  • opening.bik, a video clip played during login

Q&A

Is Athena legal?

(This is just an opinion.) Athena emulator is legal. An Athena server reads KRO GRFs which Gravity is distributing free to the public along with sakexe.exe. There is nothing illegal about using a free software as long as modification is not made and copyright notice is not removed. It is the client which makes its legal status questionable. The key component of RO client, sakexe.exe, has been modified to perform tasks other than intended. That modification is illegal. An client emulator will be legal, of course.

Is hosting of hexed executable legal?

(This is just an opinion.) The possession or use of an illegal material is illegal. This argument is based on the principle that no one is entitled to derive benefits from an illegal action.

Is posting of links legal?

(This is just an opinion.) A link, as in URL, is a piece of knowledge or tool which can be obtained legally. Unless specifically forbidden by the laws of the country where the target server is hosted, the use of such legally obtained links is legal.

Are hex editor and diff files legal?

(This is just an opinion.) Those are tools and knowledge respectively. As long as the hex editor in question is legally obtained, its subsequent use is legal. Diff files, also known as patch files, are the products of a legal application called diff which comes with almost all Linux distros. Diff files are used by another legal Linux application called patch.
